I have been painting the Maine Coast, local scenes, and still life in the Fauvist tradition for 20 years. I have taken my inspiration from the turn of the century Fauves and with it, endeavored to bring my own vision of Maine to life in my painting. Some of my favorite locations to paint include the coastline in Cape Elizabeth, Kettle Cove, Crescent Beach, Fort Williams Park, Two Lights State Park are among my favorites, as well as Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Reid State Park, Port Clyde, Boothbay, and Lake Auburn.
Artists that have inspired my work include Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cezanne, as well as the original Fauves: Henry Mattiesse, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Kees van Dongen, Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque, and those whose work can be seen as influenced by the original Fauves: The Expressionists, especially Wasily Kandinsky and the Blue Rider Group: Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, August Macke, and then the Abstract Expressionists: Mark Rothko, Willen de Kooning, Clifford Styl, Hans Hoffman, Joseph Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, and more, including Georgia O'keefe, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dove, Wolf Kahn, and the list is ever expanding!
